Ashura 2024, Importance of 9th & 10th Muharram

What is Ashura?

Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. This day is significant for Muslims around the world due to its historical and spiritual importance. In 2024, Ashura will be observed on July 16th.

Why is Ashura Important?

Ashura is a special day because of many important events in Islamic history:

  1. Prophet Musa (AS) Saved: On this day, Allah saved Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Israelites from Pharaoh by parting the Red Sea.
  2. Prophet Nuh (AS): Prophet Nuh (Noah) and his followers were saved from the great flood.
  3. Imam Hussain’s Martyrdom: Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), was martyred in the Battle of Karbala. His sacrifice is remembered as a symbol of standing against oppression.

Rajab, Muharram, Dhul Hijjah, and Dhul Qadah. Together, these four months are referred to as “Ashur E Hurum.”

Allah says in the Quran,

“Indeed, the number of months ordained by Allah is twelve—in Allah’s Record since the day He created the heavens and the earth—of which four are sacred. That is the Right Way. So do not wrong one another during these months. And together, fight the polytheists as they fight against you together. And know that Allah is with the righteous.” [Sura At-Taubah, 9: 36]

Fasting on Ashura

Fasting on the 10th of Muharram, the Day of Ashura, is highly recommended. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said fasting on this day forgives the sins of the past year.

The Importance of the 9th and 10th of Muharram

Why Fast on Both Days?

Fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram is a practice encouraged by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Here’s why:

  1. Distinguish from Jewish Tradition: The Jews fasted on the 10th of Muharram to commemorate the rescue of Prophet Musa (AS). To be different, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recommended fasting on the 9th as well.
  2. More Blessings: Fasting an extra day brings more blessings and shows a greater devotion to Allah.

How to Observe Ashura

Here are some ways to observe the 9th and 10th of Muharram:

  1. Fasting: Fast on both the 9th and 10th of Muharram. If you can’t fast on both days, try to fast on the 10th.
  2. Reflection and Repentance: Spend time reflecting on your actions and ask Allah for forgiveness.
  3. Charity: Give to those in need. Acts of kindness and charity are highly rewarded.
  4. Prayer and Quran Recitation: Spend more time in prayer and reciting the Quran to strengthen your connection with Allah.

Things to Avoid on Ashura

  • Wrong Practices: Avoid harmful practices not supported by Islam, like self-flagellation.
  • Neglecting Fasting: While not obligatory, fasting on Ashura is highly recommended.
  • Ignoring the Significance: Don’t overlook the historical and spiritual importance of this day.

Ashura is a day of deep significance for Muslims. It’s a time to remember key events in Islamic history and an opportunity for fasting, reflection, and charity. As we observe Ashura in 2024, let’s remember the lessons of faith, resilience, and justice. Engage in acts of worship and kindness, and honor the sacrifices made by prophets and pious individuals throughout history.
